"We Dare Defend Our Rights"

Since being elected in 2010, House Republicans have worked to bring true reform to Montgomery.  From ethics laws that were once the weakest in the country and are now the strongest, to the Education budget that is no longer unprotected against the sudden ups and downs of a recovering economy, it is clear that Montgomery is no longer the hotbed of corruption that it once was.  I and my colleagues in the legislature were elected on promises made, and worked tirelessly to keep those promises.

Not only did we turn the tables by simply keeping our word, but time has told that our hard work has not been in vain.  In just two years we have made significant gains in Alabama by passing needed incentives to bring more quality jobs to the state.  As a result, Alabama’s economy is now one of the fastest growing in the country; an accomplishment I am proud was achieved without even a mention of raising taxes.

But as the 2013 Regular Session is set to convene on February 5th, House Republicans are looking to events in Washington with understanding that the role of state governments are perhaps becoming more important than ever.

It is no secret that President Obama and his liberal cronies in the Democrat-controlled US Senate are pushing for an extremely leftist agenda that a majority of Americans- especially Alabamians- abhor.  With threat of skyrocketing taxes, out-of-control federal spending, unconstitutional gun control efforts and the burdensome mandates of Obamacare being forced upon individuals, it’s clear that the states are the last line of defense against an ever encroaching federal government.

That’s why House Republicans put forth a legislative agenda titled after our state’s motto, “We Dare Defend Our Rights”.  Much like the Handshake with Alabama, we are committed to making these pieces of legislation first priority to ensure that they become law.

Since being announced, the agenda has resonated with voters across the state.  10th Amendment safeguards like the “Alabama Firearms Protection Act” will give our state the strongest gun ownership protection provisions in the country.  The “Religious Liberty Act” will likewise protect the liberties of business owners by allowing them to opt out of Obamacare provisions requiring them to provide coverage for contraceptives and abortion-inducing agents.

Not only will the agenda protect our rights and liberties at home, but it will also continue our work of creating jobs, streamlining state government, and cutting government waste.  We’re delivering responsible reforms like the “Local Control School Flexibility Act”, which will allow schools to have greater control of their education system at the local level.  And as promised, the first bill that we pass this session will be the “People’s Trust Act”, which will repay the $437 million borrowed from the Alabama Trust Fund.

I invite you to visit the House Republican’s official site, and view the full contents of the agenda for yourself, or listen in on WTWX/95.9 FM on Wednesdays at 7:50 am or WRAB 1380 AM on Friday morning at 7:30AM; Rest assured that I and my Republican colleagues in the legislature will not sit idly by while Washington attempts to run over our conservative beliefs and values.
